A two year program of study and meditation on the foundations of Buddhism will begin in winter 2016 with Khenpo K. Thamphel  (Kagyu College Dehradun / University of Vienna). Under the title: “In Search of the Buddha Nature – Discover and Develop the Buddha Potential within You,” Khenpo Thamphel will explain the entire graduated path to Buddhahood and Buddha activity. In addition, he will give meditation instructions that can be practiced together or at home and help us to deepen our insights and understanding.

The program’s core text is the celebrated “Jewel Ornament of Liberation,” composed by Gampopa (1079 – 1153), one of Milarepa’s heart disciples. Based on Atisha’s “Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment,” to this day this text is regarded as the first Lamrim text in Tibet to explain the practice in stages of a bodhisattva on the path to enlightenment, and is studied by the various schools of Buddhism in Tibet.

GAMPOPA -„Jewel Ornament of Liberation“

The twenty-one chapters of this work systematically set forth the path that must be taken if one wishes to attain Buddhahood – no more and no less. If one leaves out one step, the goal cannot be achieved. More is not needed, this is the complete path. The text is a pith instruction, not a detailed commentary, a simple, clear and consistent instruction. It comprises the core statements on:

Cause: The Buddha nature
Basis: The precious human existence
Condition: The spiritual friend
Methods : Meditation on impermanence, detriments of the cycle of existence, karma, love and compassion
Bodhicitta: The Six Liberating Qualities of Bodhicitta
Fruit: Perfect awakening and to transform them into one’s own experience.

Only through intensive study, repeated reading and continuous meditation can we penetrate this profound text. H.H. the Dalai Lama emphasizes that it is best to rely on an authentic teacher and to practice in order to fathom the eintire depth of this magnificent work.

Khenpo Thamphel teaches in English and now also speaks a little German so that various questions and topics can be discussed directly with him.
